About Us
Southglen Estate is a special place in Western Australia, nestled between two ridges of the Darling Scarp. This valley experiences unique weather conditions during autumn, winter and spring. Cold nights, misty mornings, trees turning all colours of the rainbow, white water rushing through the Chittawarra Brook then slowing as it flows gently into Southglen Lake and finally into the Helena river. Bird calls echoing through the valley add to the serenity of this rural hideaway.
From 1991 to 2004 Southglen Estate was Western Australia’s largest commercial llama farm. Activities using llamas with guests included llamas as sherpas on picnics on the Estate, llamas as live statues at weddings and Latin fiestas at the Hacienda, cross country llama treks, llamas at children’s parties and llamas were hired out as quirky novelties at private functions.
Southglen Estate was sold in 2004 and all the llamas were retired from active service.
Most of them were eventually sold to other llama lovers but there are still three in the valley. You can see them, normally, off to the right as you drive along the gravel road before entering the gate to Southglen Estate. Alternatively, you may walk back up the gravel road from the cottage and see them grazing in a paddock in front of the house with the white arches.
Llamas have often been referred to as the ‘aristocrats’ of the Camelid family, to which they belong. Some of them have a distinct air of superiority and can be somewhat aloof. Tempting as it may be, please do not enter the paddock to get closer to them
or try to feed them. Your co-operation and understanding is appreciated. Thank you.
Southglen Cottage is one of the original buildings on the 45 hectare property and was renovated into a stylish, "old-world" bed and breakfast in 1995 and refurbished in 2006. It can accommodate a group of one, two or three couples and is just 30 km from Perth City centre.
